Few people outside South Florida were even aware (to
this day) that a very nasty hurricane named Wilma hit Broward and Dade
County on October 24th 2005. Everyone's mind remained on hurricane Katrina.
Here in the Ft. lauderdale, Pompano Beach area where (our UAC office is
located) was without electricity or telephone service for weeks. Traffic
lights were out in 90% of the county.
And the devastation list goes on and on. People today still do not have
roofs or home repairs. There is still a barrage of blue plastic sheets
over roofs. That is why the November 20th UAC 29th Annual Family Luncheon
was cancelled as well as the December 2005 Holiday Gathering. We were
lucky to have a Wine/Cheese Silent Auction in January 2006 to raise
money for medical/aid/relief and Ukraine educational programs.
Now, the 2006 hurricane season is upon us. Hopefully, Mother Nature
will be kinder to all of us this year...
***This is not to say the horrid devastation of Hurricane Katrina is
forgotten. |
